Algeria is planning to export electrical energy to Europe by sea, according to the country’s Energy Minister, Mohammad Arkab. Speaking at the inauguration of a natural gas-powered mobile power station in al-Bay province in eastern Algeria, Arkab highlighted Algeria’s growing focus on electricity generation, with the country boasting 25,000 megawatts. The Minister added that Algeria would increase its electricity production through natural gas and solar power stations, and accelerate efforts to provide clean energy to Europe.

Arkab also announced that Algeria is currently carrying out preparations, studies and other actions in collaboration with its European partners, aimed at successfully exporting electrical energy by sea. These efforts will be supported by natural gas exploration activities in the Mediterranean, being conducted by Sonatrach, Algeria’s national oil and gas company.

In addition to this, Arkab pointed out that significant progress had been made in the completion of the Nigeria-Niger-Algeria natural gas pipeline. This pipeline is considered a crucial building block for energy cooperation between African countries, with only 1,800 kilometers remaining to complete the 4,000-kilometer pipeline connecting the three countries.

These developments highlight Algeria’s growing ambitions to become a key player in the provision of clean energy to Europe, and reinforce the country’s position as one of the leading generators of electricity in the Mediterranean basin.
