New Law Criminalizes Distribution of Nude Photos and Videos Without Consent in Uzbekistan
A new law has been approved by the Senate in Uzbekistan that criminalizes the distribution of nude photos and videos of others without their consent. The Law «On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Documents of the Republic of Uzbekistan in connection with the further improvement of the system of reliable protection of the rights, freedoms, and legal interests of women and children» came into force on April 12.
According to Article 1413 added to the Criminal Code, disseminating information that denigrates the honor and dignity of a person and reflects the private aspects of human life is now criminalized. Specifically, the penalty for sharing naked photos and videos of a person’s body and genitals without their consent, or threatening to do so, is a fine of 400-600 base calculating units (BCUs), compulsory community service for up to 360 hours, or correctional work for up to three years.
If these actions are committed repeatedly or by a dangerous recidivist, with a prior conspiracy by a group of people against a person who is under the age of eighteen, then the punishment will be harsher. They will be punished with compulsory community service from 360 to 480 hours, restriction of freedom from one to three years, or up to three years of deprivation of liberty.
This new law reflects Uzbekistan’s commitment to the protection of women and children’s rights, freedoms, and legal interests. The penalty for such an act is imprisonment for up to three years, showing the government’s seriousness about preventing and punishing such violations. This is a step forward towards creating a safer and more equitable society for all citizens.
