Hungary Nearly Claims Lives of Undocumented Immigrants in Truck
Hungarian Police Discover 17 Illegal Migrants in Unventilated Lorry Compartment
On Thursday afternoon, Hungarian police discovered 17 illegal migrants in an unventilated lorry compartment in Kistelek, in southern Hungary. Medics treated the Egyptians and the Libyan, who were found crammed into the cold and airless goods space. The police were tipped off by Romanian authorities and searched a Turkish truck and its 34-year-old driver. Proceedings have been launched against the people smugglers.
This discovery comes amidst heightened concern for illegal migrants attempting to enter Europe, particularly through the Balkans, and follows the recent tragedy in which 39 Vietnamese migrants were found dead in a lorry in the UK. The Hungarian government has taken a hard line on migration, constructing border fences and deploying troops to prevent migrants from entering the country. However, illegal migrants continue to attempt to cross the border, often at great personal risk.
Authorities in Hungary and across the EU are calling for greater cooperation in dealing with migration, including more effective measures to combat people smuggling and more coordinated strategies for processing asylum seekers and distributing migrants across member states. As the migrant crisis continues, many are looking for solutions that balance security concerns with humanitarian needs.
