Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Confirms Lawsuits Against Karachiganak and Kashagan Companies
Kazakhstan’s government has filed lawsuits against Karachiganak and Kashagan companies in international arbitration, according to Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev. Speaking after a weekly cabinet meeting, Satkaliyev stated that the lawsuit was filed in the interest of the people, with a compensation demand of $16.5 billion. The move follows reports in local media that the country intended to sue the two giant oil companies. The Ministry of Environment has also cited environmental violations as a reason for the legal action. The energy sector is the driving force of Kazakhstan’s economy, and the country is among the world’s top oil producers, with Karachiganak and Kashagan accounting for a significant proportion of output.
