China’s National Meteorological Center has issued a «blue alert» for sandstorms in the northern and eastern parts of the country. The sandstorms are expected to affect various provinces and autonomous regions including Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Ningxia Hui, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Xinjiang Uyghur. The capital Beijing, as well as Shanghai and Tianjin, will also be affected. This is the fourth sandstorm warning issued for northern and northeastern parts of China this year. Blue alert is the initial level in China’s four-stage weather warning system, followed by yellow, orange, and red alert levels.

Due to insufficient precipitation in the northern deserts and steppes during winter months, the sand and dust have accumulated on the ground surface. The winds blowing from north to south carry these particles resulting in the sandstorms. As a result of the sandstorm, air pollution has risen to critical levels in the capital city of Beijing. The density of PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants—indicators of the amount of particles smaller than 2.5 and 10 microns, respectively—has increased, indicating air pollution in the «toxic» category as per the International Air Quality Index. The World Health Organization warns that exposure to air pollution can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
