Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus, Ünal Üstel, has made a statement on his social media account addressing ongoing action taken by the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority Employees Union. He notes that long-term energy policies have not been implemented for years, resulting in a significant energy problem which the government has been working to resolve. However, some groups have taken action against the state authority and laws, causing harm to the people of Northern Cyprus. The economic and social costs of the recent power outages are heavy and are affecting various aspects of people’s lives, including health services and education. While the government has made it clear that KIB-TEK (Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority) will not be privatized or invested in, those responsible for the recent attacks must be held accountable. The Prime Minister believes that the protests and power cuts, which lack social support, will end soon.
