The Importance of Protecting Citizens’ Rights Without Victimizing Them: Insights from Arıklı
Erhan Arıklı, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, has criticized the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Institution Employees’ Union for their recent strike action. Speaking on the 17th Hour program on BRT, Arıklı argued that it was wrong to harm citizens to seek rights and that the union’s insistence on industrial action was unjustified. While he acknowledged that a contract with AKSA was still under discussion, he stressed that the Public Procurement Amendment Bill would pass through Parliament on Monday regardless. Arıklı also confirmed that the opening of the new Ercan Airport would be delayed by a few days due to issues with the electricity supply. Finally, the Minister updated listeners on the new domestic airline company, confirming that he would take the first flight to Istanbul and urging other airlines to enter the market to drive down prices and help revive the economy.
