Uzun Bazaar in Hatay longs for traditional holidays

Hatay’s Historical Uzun Çarşı Misses Old Days

The historical Uzun Çarşı, located in the Antakya district, was also affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey. The 3.5-kilometer-long bazaar, known for its narrow streets and colorful shops, used to be frequented by both local and foreign tourists, but now it is quieter than before.

The shop owners of the bazaar, who sell everything from traditional handicrafts to food and clothing, are missing the lively atmosphere that accompanied the Ramadan Feast in the past. The shop owners are also mourning the loss of their neighbors and loved ones in the earthquake.

One shop owner, 78-year-old Necdet Aklar, who has been selling spices in Uzun Çarşı since 1996, spoke about his sadness over the loss of his relatives in the disaster. Aklar also explained the challenges they face in the aftermath of the earthquake, including the loss of his car and the need to transport water to his shop from another town.

Another shop owner, 26-year-old Nuri Başak, who works as a butcher in the bazaar, reminisced about the bustling atmosphere during Ramadan and their famous tray kebabs. He also expressed his grief over the loss of his neighbors and fellow shop owners.

Despite the challenges, the bazaar shop owners are trying to mobilize the region and give hope to people amidst the ruins. Emre Bucak, who runs a bakery in the bazaar, expressed that they come to their workplace to comfort and alleviate their pain.

The historical Uzun Çarşı is not just a marketplace but also a lifeblood for Antakya. Although it may be quieter now, the bazaar shop owners are determined to revive their beloved bazaar and restore its liveliness.
