History of Nuruosmaniye Mosque

The construction of the Nuruosmaniye Mosque began in the Ottoman period in 1749, during the reign of Mahmud I. But upon the death of this sultan, his brother Osman III finished the mosque. The opening date of the mosque is 5 December 1755. Constructed by Simon foreman under the leadership of Emini Ahmed Efendi, this flamboyant work was designed in accordance with the art movement that emerged in Europe at that time. It is even said that an architect was brought to Europe at that time to build a mosque here.

Features of Nuruosmaniye Mosque

The search for the magnificent and large dome that Mimar Sinan sought in his works continued to be sought by Simon in this work as well. All of the mosques built during the Ottoman period were generally designed as rectangular until that period. But with this Mosque, this design became a thing of the past and the square design began to be used. One of the striking details in the construction of Nuruosmaniye Mosque, unlike other mosques, is the use of iron in its construction. In this way, it was able to reach the present day comfortably without being affected by earthquakes too much. At the same time, there is a 12-room cellar in the lower part of the Mosque, consisting of a total of 19 sections. This cellar operated as a show and exhibition area at that time.

The dome of Nuruosmaniye Mosque was designed to be 43 meters high and 25 meters in diameter. This mosque, whose ceiling is covered with a very large dome, arouses admiration in terms of its construction. In fact, it is one of the largest and imposing domes built during the Ottoman period. On the dome of the mosque, the 35th verse of the Surah Nur is written. Here it is written “God is the light of the heavens and the earth”. Between the dome arches and the wall, the entire 115-meter-long Conquest Surah is written.

At the end of the mosque, stone cones were used for the first time instead of lead in the minarets. One of the most important features of the mosque is that it has impressive examples of calligraphy. The magnificent examples of calligraphy applied from the door knockers to the dome of the mosque can be seen. On the right and left side of the entrance of the mosque, there is a prayer that means «open your good doors for us».
