Hungarian Foreign Minister: Europe and Africa Call for Peace in Ukraine
Europe and Africa have joined forces in calling for peace in Ukraine in order to avoid a global crisis, according to Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s foreign minister, during a press conference with his Liberian counterpart. Szijjártó highlighted the shared difficulties faced by both continents due to the ongoing conflict, including blocked supply chains and trade routes, rising prices, food shortages, and security threats. He also emphasized the importance of a commitment to peace as the basis for pragmatic cooperation. In a separate announcement, Szijjártó revealed that 25 Liberian students will be granted a Hungarian scholarship each year, with a mixed economic committee to be established following interest in Hungarian agriculture. He also called for an economic partnership agreement between the European Union and West Africa to avoid migration resulting from war crises. Responding to a question regarding the US ambassador to Hungary’s press briefing, Szijjártó said Hungary and the US viewed the war differently, and that it’s perplexing why the US felt it necessary to pressure Hungary to change its point of view. The minister added that he and the Polish ambassador were linked by «friendship and brotherhood,» with different approaches to the war not causing the two nations to break apart.
