The People’s Party Holds Third Ordinary Congress in Nicosia
The People’s Party held its Third Ordinary Congress at Paradise Park in Nicosia on Saturday. The event started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem. The Party Secretary General, Ahmet Tokatlıoğlu, conveyed the reasons for founding the party seven years ago and summarized the events since. He reminded attendees that the party withdrew from Parliament by taking the sine-i millet decision to protect the state and force the government to resign.
In his speech, Kudret Özersay, the Chairman of the People’s Party, expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the 6 February earthquake and called for those responsible to be held accountable. He emphasized that the party does not and will not accept to be a system party, pledging to continue advocating for proper and clean politics.
Özersay touched on the electricity issue, stating that the government’s attempts to conclude a contract with AKSA without a tender are not in the interest of society. He also criticized the government’s erosion of the rule of law and constitutional superiority, calling for the government to resign.
The congress also featured the reading and voting of the annual report and financial report, followed by the election of the party presidency and council. According to the statute of the People’s Party, the new General Secretary and members of the Central Executive Organ, Disciplinary, and Audit organs will be determined in the first Party Assembly meeting after the Congress.
