Understanding Prostate Enlargement and its Symptoms.
Expert Warns About Benign Prostate Enlargement, Its Symptoms and Treatment Options
Benign prostate enlargement is a condition that affects one out of every two men over the age of 50, according to Dr. Mustafa Yücel Boz, an instructor member. Speaking about the condition, Dr. Boz noted that it can cause difficulty in urination when the prostate gland becomes enlarged, putting pressure on the urinary canal, which can result in obstruction. Symptoms of the condition include difficulty starting urination, weak and interrupted urination, feeling unable to empty the bladder completely, frequent urination, sudden urination, and urinary incontinence.
Dr. Boz stressed the importance of distinguishing between benign prostate enlargement and prostate cancer, as the symptoms are similar. A prostate examination and a blood test to determine PSA levels can differentiate between the two. If medication does not alleviate the symptoms, Dr. Boz recommends surgery. Currently, the HOLEP, THULEP, and BIPOLEP methods are considered the most effective treatments for benign prostate enlargement.
Of these methods, Dr. Boz explained that HOLEP and THULEP are similar, with the only difference being the type of laser used. The BIPOLEP method, on the other hand, uses a different energy source. HOLEP allows the surgeon to remove a large amount of tissue without making any incisions, resulting in less bleeding and a lower probability of recurrence when compared to standard prostate surgeries. Patients can be discharged one to two days after surgery, with the catheter removed.
While complications such as urinary strictures and urinary incontinence are rare, surgical treatments for prostate enlargement are reserved for cases where medication fails to provide relief. HOLEP is a popular option due to its short operation time, low incidence of bleeding, and short postoperative hospital stay. Ultimately, early detection and treatment can help mitigate the symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected by benign prostate enlargement.
